Fun

It’s almost time to ring in the new year! Twenty-fourteen is just around the corner and here I am, shocked Christmas is over and we are just days away from the big 2-0-1-4.  Seriously, how did we get here so fast?  At the end of each month, I found myself saying, “Where did this month go?” and now I find myself saying, “Where did this year go?!”

Is this what it feels like to grow up? The days/months/years just start to flash before your eyes? CAN WE SLOW DOWN?!

It seems like it was just yesterday I was writing last years “CELEBRATING NYE” post. No, really… It feels like yesterday. But as I think back on this year, and as I look through all of our posts, I realize what an exciting and successful year it truly has been for Flair Miami.  So, in honor of this year I decided to mention my top 5 FlairMiami highlight moments of 2013.

        1. The Next Face of Rimmel London – This was fun and completely unexpected.  I was at Miami International Fashion Week, where I was asked to sign up for a Rimmel London modeling contest (yes little 5’1 me) and next thing I knew I was selected as one of the top 20 finalist in the nation.  Okay, so I ended up not winning…but it was definitely a highlight from this year! It is a memory I will never forget and it’s all because of Flair Miami that I even stumbled across the opportunity!
        2. Flair Miami Turns 1!  – HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLASHBACK! When I first started on this journey with Flair Miami I never would have thought I’d be able to be a part of the special one year anniversary.  It is just the beginning and I am more than thankful to be able to be a part of it all! To many more birthdays and Flair Miami celebrations!
        3. Style, Sweets & Sips – In honor of Flair Miami’s one year, we decided to celebrate with style, sweets, and sips.  Thanks to all the bloggers who participated in making our one year unforgettable! It was also during this same time that Sabrina joined our team for the summer…actually it was at this very party that I met the lovely Sabrina! When I think back to this time, I think about nothing but fun! I am positive we were all on a Flair Miami high this summer! ;)
        4. Fashion for a Cause – Thanks to The Fashion Poet and Peace, Love, World, Flair Miami was able to be a part of Fashion For A Cause during breast cancer awareness month! This was definitely one of the highlights of my year with Flair Miami!
        5. Miami Web Awards Nomination –  Remember that time Flair Miami got nominated as one of the top fashion blogs in Miami? Oh yeah! That was last month! I think that pretty much sums up this whole year, and although we did not go home with the prize we are happy to say we were nominated and we are even more happy for our friend The Fashion Poet, Annie Vasquez, for winning!

With this year coming to a close and all the wonderful things we were be able to be a part of, I feel extra thankful for 2013 and the opportunities I was able to partake in because of Vannia & the blog.  So, thank you Vannia for not only being such  a wonderful friend, but for truly taking your time to include me & make me a part of Flair Miami! I am beyond thankful!

And thank you to the blogger community and all the readers! We couldn’t have done half of the things we did this year with-out you! To many  more years filled with fun…but even more with FLAIR!

OH SWEET HONEY BUN!

Thanksgiving has come and gone, but Black Friday is in full effect. Though there are definitely a few great sales out there, I must say, I’m not really a big fan of shopping when everyone and their grandma is out bargain hunting as well. So instead, I wanted to share with you a little taste of Miami’s (well Homestead’s technically) best honey buns, and a few things for which I am thankful.

If you’re not quite done with the “gobble till you wobble” Thanksgiving theme and you’ve got still got a sweet tooth, head on over to Knauss Berry Farm. There you’ll find the best honey buns and milk shakes around town! Be prepared for a line as the farm only opens November – mid April, so this is prime time.

I’m not even a huge sweets fan, but their honey buns are right out of the oven and quite scrumptious!

pensive truckThe whole experience there is just fun and different, it reminds me that I love this time of year! Temperature drops, families come together, and it’s time to reflect on the blessings that surround you.

So, here are mine: (Warning, this may get a little sappy.)

  • Family: I truly cannot even begin to express how blessed I am with the wonderful family that surrounds me. From my hard-working single mom who raised me to be the woman that I am today; to my awesome husband who puts up with my craziness every day. Yesterday, the walls of my little home echoed with laughter, kids screaming, voices singing, and moms chatting… It filled my heart with joy. Thank you God for every one of them!
  • Life/Health: I know it seems a little general for me to be thankful for life as a whole, but I am! The very air that fills my lungs today is a gift that I cannot take for granted, and though my life isn’t always filled with rainbows and butterflies… I’m even thankful for the hard times in between.
  • Friends: Life is so much sweeter when moments of joy are shared with friends! So in the spirit of thanksgiving, I’m not only thankful for friends that I personally know and do life with, I’m also thankful for those of you who I’ve known in the past and others who I’ve yet to meet. Blogging and social media has really brought this whole friendship thing to a whole new level, and I like it! I love that even in the blogging world there’s a little community of people who collaborate and build each other up. I love that YOU have helped me grow, and that through YOU a silly little blog idea became an accomplishment. So with a grateful heart to YOU I give thanks!01-DSC_0017

I can officially say that I am finished with my Junior year of college! Bring on the senioritis! Anyway, my finals week was one of the most hectic weeks, and so I wanted to end the week right.  What better way to end it than with an intense yoga class taught by one of the most inspiring yoga teachers I know?

My yoga adventure began this past Sunday evening with two of my close friends. We heard Yoga Girl Rachel Brathen was going to be in town doing yoga workshops all over Miami, and we were on it in a heartbeat! We signed up for an “All You Can Handstand Class” and boy did they mean it when they said All You Can Handstand.

Rachel Brathen is a Swedish native living in Aruba where she teaches yoga at Manchebo Beach Resort and Spa.  Her yoga classes are a mix of Hatha and Vinyasa flow while incorporating breathing techniques, creative sequencing, and core work. Her goal for each class is to energize the body, cultivate a meditative consciousness, and give greater vitality and health. And I must say, her class did just that!

With the help of  Om’Echaye Wellness and Fitness Center and Love and Vegetables  vegetarian and vegan restaurant I definitely felt energized! Rachel is so talented, and inspiring, and I am so happy I was able to be taught by her.

The All You Can Yoga community brought us together.  People from different parts of town were there because of this one thing that we all have in common, a love for YOGA!

In my previous posts you’ve probably read about the DWNTWN concert series, and free movie Wednesdays at the Wall Cast, but did you know that those were once just ideas?

These ideas, among many others have come to fruition thanks to the Knights Art Challenge. And now, it’s time to turn your idea into reality!

From Feb. 4 – Mar. 4, John S. and the James L. Knight Foundation will be accepting applications for a Miami-based community contest funding cultural projects that will grow the arts scene and engage/enrich our community experience.

Think you’ve got a good idea? Give it a shot!  Applications are open to the public.

Only three simple rules. All projects must:
1. Include the arts
2. Take place in South Florida or benefit South Florida
3. Match Knight’s funding (If your idea is chosen you receive a grant, but you find other funds to match theirs.)

“We’re looking for the best ideas – truly Miami ideas – that help bring art to our neighborhoods and make culture ubiquitous in South Florida,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president/arts. “In a truly creative town like ours, we see the challenge as a chance for everybody to participate, to dream, and ultimately see their ideas through to reality.”

Still have a few questions you’d like addressed? Be sure to attend one of the community roundtable discussions listed below.

7 p.m. Feb. 18: Cinema Paradiso, Ft. Lauderdale, 503 SE 6th St, Fort Lauderdale
7 p.m. Feb. 19: Opa-locka City Hall, 780 Fisherman St., Second Floor
7 p.m. Feb. 20: Cannonball, Downtown Miami, 1035 N. Miami Ave., Suite 200
7 p.m., Feb. 21: South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, 10950 SW 211 St.

Since 2008, the Knights Art Challenge has funded over 140 projects and spent close to $20 million, allowing our community to celebrate the arts and reach global recognition. So together, let’s continue this tradition and take initiative. (Who knows maybe I’ll team up with my artsy husband and submit an idea of our own.)

For more information, visit KnightArts.org. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter @knightarts and #knightarts.
