Hi friends! It’s been a few days since my last post… Sorry to be missing in action, all I can I say is that thanksgiving got the best of me. But, in a good way. I was able to get some much needed down time and spend some quality time with family and friends. Plus, I have a very busy week ahead of me at work, so I purposely took it slow this weekend.

Did I mention that I made my very first turkey? I did, I did, and it was a success! Anyway, I hope you’ve had a great long weekend and a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I can’t help but to mention how thankful I am, God really has been so good to me. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful husband, a loving and hard-working mother, an amazing family, and great friends. I love my job, and I love the fact that my “idea” of a blog actually became a reality this year. Even the fact that you’re reading this right now, thank you! Thank you for allowing me to have an outlet for my girly-ness and for my love for Miami. Really, THANK YOU! I appreciate each of you more than you know.

So, back to business, or fun, or today’s post, or whatever you want to call it… Today, I’d like to tell you about ipsy.

Just a couple of months ago I had subscribed to a monthly beauty box called Birchbox. At first, I thought it was so much fun to get these monthly beauty packages. But, as the months went on, I became less and less impressed with their sample sized products, I felt like I should be getting them for free. Needless to say, I ditched Birchbox, did a little research, and found a similar service… This one is definitely worth the price.

It’s called ipsy.com, and for just $10, subscribers receive a monthly collectible make-up bag with 4-5 deluxe-size samples or full-size beauty products. Totally awesome! Here’s what I got my first month. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

    1. Bare Minerals – Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss (Dare Devil)
    2. Nailtini Nail Polish – Millionaire
    3. Meet Matt(e) – Matte Eyeshadow (Matt Batali)
    4. Starlet Eyeliner – Black
    5. Benefit – They’re Real Mascara

Loved: Nailtini glitter nail polish (For a fun and festive look, paint a coat over a dark oxblood colored polish. Hope you like it, I definitely recommend subscribing!)

Whether it’s a birthday, holiday, special occasion, or just a regular day, all days call for sushi.

CALLING ALL BOOKWORMS

Are you attending this year’s 8-day literary party?

Formerly known as Books by the Bay, the Miami Book Fair International will be celebrating their 29th anniversary and this year’s events are scheduled from Nov. 11 – 18. From book signings, documentary screenings, writing workshops, to interactive food tastings and children’s arts and crafts; it’s the largest gathering of the year for readers and writers all across the nation.

This Fall is no different than others, the streets of downtown Miami and the Miami Dade College Downtown Campus will be filled with bookworms, artists, thespians, and over 300 critically-acclaimed authors. So what’s the name that everyone is talking about? Tom Wolfe.

Wolfe, an iconic journalist and author of over a dozen books, (best known for his classic writings The Bonfire of the Vanities and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test) is scheduled for a presentation and book signing on opening night! Fans like me, await with much excitement, not only to see what trademark white suit he’ll be wearing; but to hear more details of his new book entitled Back to Blood, a novel set here in Miami.

And Wolfe isn’t the only notable name. Other renowned scheduled appearances are:  Novelist and literary journalist, Joan Didion; writer for The New Yorker, Adam Gopni; and Pulitzer Prize winning  journalist Robert Caro, among many others…

Looking for a new read?  Don’t forget, the street fair begins Friday, Nov. 15th allowing over 250 publishers to sell both new and old books, some are signed collectibles and even original manuscripts.

Plan your week ahead and be sure to check out their list of programs and events today.

When opportunity knocks… LET YOUR GIRLFRIENDS IN!

If you had told me (Ginger) a year ago that I would be working in direct sales for a jewelry company, I would have told you, “You’re crazy.” But for six months now, I have been working for Stella & Dot, a home-based, social selling, and accessible-luxury brand jewelry company.

And though I do love jewelry, fashion, and having fun with girlfriends; my primary motivation to become an independent stylist with Stella & Dot had more to do with my attraction to the vision and values of CEO and founder, Jessica Herrin.

In the late 90’s, Herrin, a student at Stanford Business School, co-founded one of the first online gift registries for brides. Within months, the site expanded into a full service bridal portal and merged with WeddingChannel.com. But grateful as she was for her success, when she envisioned her future, she didn’t see how adding a child to their family could be a fit with her grueling schedule.

Eventually, Herrin sold WeddingChannel.com, took a job as an e-commerce executive at Dell, and began to focus on creating her ideal business – in her words, “a company that you own but that doesn’t own you.” This was my first clue that I aligned with her values. This time Herrin changed her focus. Instead of developing a business focused on products, she focused on the target employee: a woman with kids who needed flexibility.  This was my second clue for alignment.

In 2003, Herrin began Luxe Jewels, a business based on at-home jewelry-making parties. Then in 2004, she resigned from Dell to devote more time to both of her babies: newborn daughter, Charlie and Luxe Jewels. She began hosting her own parties and recruiting Luxe sales reps. In 2006, after the birth of her second daughter and with hundreds of trunk shows under her belt, Herrin fine-tuned a social selling concept, transitioned from making jewelry to selling jewelry, and that grew to $1 million in sales.

But, Herrin was far from satisfied. She knew her business model could do more. That summer she met Blythe Harris, who became a rising star and had recently introduced Banana Republic’s jewelry line. The two shared a vision of selling fashionable jewelry with a broad appeal. Clue three, their collections have something for everyone and the jewelry practically sells itself.  At that time, Herrin decided to rebrand her company a second time and Herrin and Harrris renamed the company after the two most inspirational women in each of their lives: their grandmothers, Stella & Dot.

Fast forward to today. Stella & Dot’s mission is to give every woman the means to style their own lives. Clue number four: they leave it up to me to decide how much I want to earn. Herrin’s focus remains the salesperson, or as we now are called, the stylists. “Some stylists are really brand ambassadors. They like hosting an occasional trunk show and the opportunity to buy affordable jewelry,” Herrin explains. “Other stylists work full time during the school year and take the summers off. The important thing is they choose how much and when they work.”

Since joining Stella & Dot, I’ve been building my team and my focus is the same as Jessica Herrin’s; you, the stylist. There are three choices for initial investment to launch your own business and new stylists earn the investment back, on average, within four trunk shows. There couldn’t be a better time to sign up with the holiday season approaching. Full or part-time fashion, fun and rewards are a phone call or email away. I would love to chat with you if you’re getting a clue too. Give me a call at 305.904.9851 or email me at gingermokher@gmail.com.

OCTOBER BIRCHBOX

Today I received my second Birchbox and yet again, I clapped my hands with excitement when I saw the box sitting in my mailbox. Will my excitement ever stop? Between my Vogue subscriptions and my Birchbox, now I actually look forward to getting the mail.

This month, Birchbox and goop  (an online publication created by Gwyneth Paltrow offering recipes, travel info, shopping ideas, and more) put together a few must-try products and sent them our way…

Here’s what I got:

  • Jouer – Lip Enhancer
  • Kiehls – Rosa Artica Eye Cream
  • Ouidad – Hydrafusion Intense Curl Cream
  • Supergoop! – City Sunscreen Serum
  • Mighty Leaf Tea – Assorted Whole Leaf Tea Bags

Loved: Kiehls Rosa Artica Eye Cream (But I’m kind of biased, I love all things Kiehls.)
Could live without: Jouer Lip Enhancer (I liked the conditioning aspect, but not the enhancing.)

I still haven’t decided if I’ll continue doing the monthly Birchbox posts, it’s really only helpful if you’re getting the boxes too. That way we can compare products and see what else it out there. You can register for your own box here.

I may venture out and try the other options like ipsy or glossybox. Are you subscribed to any? If so, which one do you like best?

Well, friends that’s all for today. I’ll be in Tennessee this weekend, attempting to take in some real Fall weather. Stay safe and dry as Hurricane Sandy passes by and keep those umbrellas handy. Have a great Halloween weekend!

ON THE WALL

On the corner of 17 Street and Washington Avenue, located just two blocks from Lincoln Road, is the New World Center, home of the New World Symphony (America’s Orchestral Academy).

And as Miami weather slowly begins to cool, NWC kicks off their 2012 SoundScape Cinema Series. A free movie series held every Wednesday night at 8pm, from now till the end of May. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic, lawn chairs, blankets and enjoy a great evening with family and friends.

PRETTY MUDDY

Perhaps by now know you that as much as I enjoy being a girly girl and playing dress up, I’m also very competitive and I really enjoy a good workout.

However, I don’t often get to have the best of both worlds, but what if I could? Is it possible to play dress up, have girl time, be competitive, and get a workout all at once? I think it is… Allow me to introduce you to the Pretty Muddy Women’s Mud Run, coming to Miami for the first time ever on November 17, 2012.

According to their founders, Pretty Muddy is a 5k (3.1 mile) “adventurous obstacle course mud run for any woman who wants to get outside, spend time with friends, and have fun.”

Why would anyone want to do this? Why not! It’s good clean fun that can make a difference in your community.

Okay, so maybe I lied a little, and it’s not that clean. But it can definitely make an impact. Before each muddy event, the organization links up with a Pretty Preferred Partner (a local organization) that is dedicated to making a difference in the city they’re visiting. Pretty Muddy then donates $5 for each registration under the partner’s link and a 2.5% of each additional entry fee.

Did I mention they encourage playing dress up? Best costume receives a prize!

Oh and don’t worry, you don’t have to be an athlete to complete the run. You can take as long as you like, and you can either run or walk the course. Scared of the challenging obstacle courses? Don’t be, some are simple and fun, while others may be a bit more difficult. But you don’t have to complete every obstacle; unless of course, you want to… It’s just good ol’ dirty fun.

So what are you waiting for? Register today and let’s do it together. Flair Miami and Pretty Muddy are teaming up and giving away a free registration to one of our readers for a limited time. Just leave a comment below using the words “Pretty Muddy” in a fun sentence. Creativity is strongly encouraged, good luck! Winner will be announced Nov. 1.

Hope you’ll join me.

Last Thursday night, FlairMiami was invited to partake in the Girl’s Night Out Miami Posh Party, and posh it was!

The poolside of the Miami Beach Shore Club was surrounded by lovely local fashion bloggers and friends. Poshmark hosted the evening to promote a “simple and fun way to buy and sell fashion”, all via your smartphone. Most women, at one point or another have looked at their closet and thought “I have nothing to wear.” Well, chances are that you do, you just outgrew the love for the clothes you do have. So why not download the app, sell what you have, and replace it with something new ? List your items on Poshmark, and browse the closets of other fashionistas, genius!

The evening was a blast and the Poshmark clan were some of my favorite ladies, thanks for putting the event together!
