BROWS THAT WOW

Whether you realize it or not, eyebrows play a pivotal role in beauty. They frame the eyes, nose and overall face structure. While some brows are less exciting than others (ahem, mine are normally pretty lame). I’ve realized just how a simple shaping can give you a whole new look. Say hello to brows that wow!

I consider myself to be a beauty minimalist, maybe even an amateur. I’m not the girl with flawless make-up or perfect brows. On a regular basis, I throw on some mascara, blush and then out the door I go.  But Miami’s eyebrow shaping expert, Mayra Artze Mata of Mayra’a Art Beauty may slowly be changing my ways.

I visited Mayra at her new Coral Gables location inside Zen Hair. I had heard wonders about Mayra. In fact, a ton of  Miami fashion bloggers have brows that wow because of her. But since I wasn’t blessed with bushy arches. (Yes, I think bushy brows are a blessing, have you seen Cara Delevingne?) I normally opt to keep my few strands, let’s just say I had yet to find someone I could trust with my brows. Mayras_Art_Brows_That_Wow-1 Mayras_Art_Brows_That_Wow-2
Mayra is a brow expert and has been in the industry for over 15 years. She is very enthusiastic about her work and finds it rewarding to see her clients looking and feeling their best. Her arch-shaping technique helped give my brows some dimension and even appeared to lift my eyes a bit.

Wondering how much it costs? You can expect to pay $35 or $45. ($45 for the brow guru herself, or $35 for a technician trained by her.) Shaping technique lasts 4-6 weeks, which is twice as long as regular waxing.

The subtle change will not only enhance your look, but it will also add a youthful glow. Give it a try. Your eyes will love it, and your face will thank you for it!

NO SHAVE NOVEMBER?

It’s inevitable! For most women, hair removal is part of our everyday routine. Tweezing, shaving, waxing, the methods may actually vary for different areas of our body.

But does no shave November also apply to women? Okay, okay… Maybe it sounds like I’m about to cause an upheaval and empower women to embrace their fur. Trust me, that’s not my plan. Ew!

But I must admit, I’ve always been a little envious of the fact that men don’t have to shave their legs. I guess as a girl, society expects you to always be hair free. And while shaving your legs seemed like the coolest thing ever in sixth grade, nowadays I dread it. The reality is that the older you get the less exciting it becomes. Now I see it as more of a chore. Don’t you?

For a really long time, I contemplated the idea of laser hair removal. But I was too cheap to go to a spa and commit to buying a package, so instead I tried an at-home-equipment. I researched these gadgets like a mad woman and after finally committing to one and using it a few times, I wasn’t impressed.

Having already embarked on a mission to be hair-free, I jumped on the bandwagon and finally committed to an actual package at Touch Laser Med Spa.  I started with my full bikini and then decided to also include my legs. After just one session, I saw about 70% less hair growth.Zara_Tank_Old Navy_Shorts_ootd) (13)Zara_Tank_Old Navy_Shorts_ootd) (7)
Touch uses The Candela GentleYAG® laser system which is top-of-the-line equipment. It requires no gel and is safe for all skin types. According to experts, “The infrared laser delivers invisible energy deep into the skin. By heating its targets slowly, it is very effective and safe. This is especially true for darker skinned individuals who would not normally be candidates for laser procedures.”

So far, I’ve only had two session and it has proven to be extremely effective. I’m a fan. No-shave November, I’m ready for you!

Ready to give laser hair removal a try? If you live in Miami or even Peru, give Touch Laser Med Spa a call and book your appointment. Use the code FLAIRMIAMI and get 20% off any procedure.

Before your visit, make sure to limit plucking and waxing for about 5-6 weeks before the treatment. Waxing and plucking temporarily removes the root of the hair, which is something to avoid since the laser actually targets the root. Also avoid sun exposure both before and after the treatment — sun exposure makes the process less effective.

Does it hurt? Hmmm. The pain varies but I’d describe it as small flicks on your skin. It’s not bad and it sure beats waxing. (That hurts like hell.) The first session is a little more painful than the rest, but afterward it’s smooth sailing.

If you happen to be visiting Miami, the Wynwood Food Tour is a must! Wynwood has easily turned into one of Miami’s trendiest neighborhoods. It is home to about 70+ art galleries and over 100 restaurants that exhibit the eclectic taste of our culture. A few weeks back, the hubby and I had the privilege of spending a Saturday afternoon walking the streets of this vibrant neighborhood with Miami Culinary Tours.

The lovely Mirka, (a fellow Miami-Beach local) was our guide and she curated a wonderful Wynwood food tour where she joyously introduced the neighborhood’s art, cuisine and culture. Her cheerful spirit and historical Miami-knowledge was a breath of fresh air. The Miami weather however, eh not so fresh! It was as hot as can be, but the food and drinks made it all worthwhile. ;)

As any loyal foodie would, I ate anything and everything that was placed before me. We made several stops along the way, and I even managed to saved room for dessert. The total tour time was about 2.5 hours, we visited about 6 different restaurants and had way more than a full lunch…

Our culinary Wynwood food tour advventure went as follows:

  1. Wynwood Walls Wynwood Doors – This was our meeting spot, here we learned about the street art and got some 411 about local, national, and international artists.
    DSC_0534
  2. Wynwood Kitchen & Bar – Our first stop was this well-known hip restaurant offering a tapa-style menu. Chef Miguel Aguilar sent us some ropa vieja empanadas, tequenos & sweet plantains — these were paired with a local cold brew. The perfect starter!
    DSC_0541
    DSC_0542
  3. R House Restaurant & Gallery – Then we headed to this unique restaurant/art gallery serving an eclectic mix of American, Mediterranean, Latin and Asian cuisines. Here, we had a brisket hoagie roll that was paired with a perfect bite of zesty corn.DSC_0568

  4. Made In Italy Gourmet – After a few bites, we made a pit stop at this rustic and quaint Italian gourmet market, it was a small flashback of Sienna. We sampled some fresh bread and stinky cheese? ( I forgot the name of it, I wasn’t a big fan.) But the place was adorable! Next time, I’d go back and try an actual meal.DSC_0595
  5. Jimmy’z Kitchen – Oh Jimmy! My mouth waters at the thought of this delectable Puerto Rican-style mofongo ( fried-mashed plantains) & chicken. This hit the spot!DSC_0587
  6. Suviche –  After almost suffering from a food comma, we stopped by Suviche and sipped on a pisco sour. Though Jimmy may have been my favorite meal, Suviche definitely took the cake for best ambiance.
  7. Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop –  Last but not least, we ended the food tour with the world famous key lime pie — made by an all time favorite local Derek, a City of Miami firefighter, fighting fires by day and baking by night.DSC_0593

My favorite part? Need you ask? The killer mofongo from Jimmy’z Kitchen and learning about the different graffiti artists featured on the Wynwood Walls and Wynwood Doors.

Whether you’re a Miami local or just popping by to check out the city, I highly recommend you check out any of their food tours. Miami Culinary Tours also offers tours around South Beach and Little Havana. Next on our list, we may just check out South Beach Food Tour. What about you?

We all need to try at least one good taco in our lives, and no, I’m not talking about drive-thru tacos. Porque, let’s be real, yo no quiero Taco Bell. But, a fresh authentic Mexican spot, that’s a total win in my book.

And, let’s face it, finding a Cuban sandwich and pastelito in the 305 is a total breeze, but a fresh authentic Mexican taco? Those are a little hard to come by. (I guess we can somewhat envy our Texas and Cali friends after all.)

So, where are the best tacos in Miami you ask? I’ve done a fair share of taco hunting and rounded up 5 of the best tacos spots in Miami. Some are quaint mom-and-pop-shops that have been around for years, while others are new and trendy locations.

5. Huahua’s Taqueria
 • 1211 Lincoln Road – Miami Beach
This taqueria has a playful take on traditional tacos. They are mostly known for their fried chicken tacos. Even Food Network Magazine and Zaggat named them one of the best tacos in US. Located on the west side of Lincoln Road, this casual taco shop offers delicious food and a welcoming fun environment.

4. Bodega Taqueria y Tequila
• 1220 16th Street, Miami Beach
1 tequila, 2 tequila, 3 tequila, floor! (Shhhh, there’s a cool secret bar in the back.) Pero, 1 taco, 2 taco, 3 taco, more! This hip taqueria/lounge offers affordable late-night delicious eats, straight out of an Airsteam truck. The Tacos Al Pastor are my absolute favorite, filled with broiled pork, charred pineapple, red onion, cilantro, and salsa rosada. I bet you can’t have just one!

3. Coyo Taco
• 2300 NW 2nd Ave. #3 – Wynwood
Coyo Taco may technically still be considered a newbie in the taco community, but their delicious and fresh take on traditional Mexican cuisine has definitely taken them to the top — quick. Their homemade tortillas, locally and naturally sourced veggies, meats, and seafood has been drawing crowds at all hours of the day. From a happening lunch spot, to a late night bite with drinks. Coyo is the spot to be, and with these hot summer days ahead, the pulpo (charred octopus) taco is one of my faves.

2. Taqueria Morelia
• 961 W Palm Drive – Florida City & 1875 NE 8th St – Homestead
This spot isn’t located in the heart of “Miami'” per se. They actually have two locations, one in Florida City and another in Homestead. I visited their Homestead location. (I pulled-up to the restaurant which is literally part of a gas station. The location definitely made me a little skeptic, I mean, I’m all about small mom-and-pops, but the gas station made me think twice.) After doing a little research on the internet, I realized that Morelia’s Taqueria was actually very well-rated and in fact they were known for having “the best tacos in South Florida.” With an authentic Mexican assortment of meats: al pastor, tongue, tripe, suadero (rib meat), steak, chicken, carnitas, chorizo, barbacoa beef – the options are endless. I went all in and tasted their lengua (tongue) and pastor tacos and they definitely did not disappoint. Mmmmm!

1. Viva Mexico
•  542 SW 12th Ave – Little Havana
Last but not least, this spot is for the taco purists. Their menu is quite simple, only tacos. No burritos or chimichangas found here. Their most popular item — the tacos surtidos.  This tiny restaurant offers the traditional cuts of meats: chicken, pork, carnitas, along with their untraditonal (to you and me) but very popular Mexican cuts: ear, stomach, tongue, shoulder, and rind. If you’re the adventurous type, I highly recommend the tripe. After all, carne asada is for amateurs. Viva Mexico for the win, they definitely live up to their slogan “Las únicas y las mejores” — the best and the only ones.

Grocery home delivery is finally here! Thank you, Instacart Miami!!

This San Francisco-based company officially launched their 16th location on May 19th, and of course, they chose Miami as their next place to conquer. Locals around the area can now purchase their groceries with just a few clicks.

Customers can order from Costo Wholesale, BJ’s Wholesale Club, (no need to have a membership) Whole Foods, Winn Dixie and even Petco! The company currently offers delivery services in the metro Miami area. Neighborhoods include Brickell, Downtown, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, Little Havana and Wynwood area.

Now, you too can say goodbye to sitting in traffic, looking for parking, and waiting long lines just to buy groceries! All you have to do is download the app (or go online) and create your desired grocery list. Within hours, a shopper will do all the shopping for you and deliver at your door!

How much does it cost? Depends on how much you order and how soon you want it. Prices range from $3.99 to $9.99.

If this isn’t a game changer to simplify life for all the busy moms and working professionals, I don’t know what is!

In fact, I had to try it for myself. I made a pretty large order from BJ’s (on opening day).  I’m not a big fan of grocery shopping. Therefore, quantity is key, and did I mention there is no Costco or BJ’s in the Miami Beach area?

Final verdict? I loved it. I got just what I wanted, and the customer service was great. Not only did I avoid a long drive, but I  also got an extra hour of work done! Woot woot!

Want to give it a try? Use the promotion code FLAIRMIA and get a $10 credit toward your first order, and a MONTH of free deliveries.

Happy shopping!

A big part of the reason why people don’t exercise is because they simply don’t know what to do. Questions arise and then the thought of a workout remains just a thought.

” Do I use weights? Where do I buy weights and how many should I buy? Do I have to use weights? Where do I start, and what kind of exercises can I do?”

Let’s simplify things a bit and start with a few bodyweight exercises that you can do just about anywhere. All of these exercises will strengthen your muscles and get your heart pumping. I’ll try to cover a little bit from every muscle group, from legs, arms and even some core.

The best part is, all you need is YOU! Ready to get this weight-free workout started? Let’s get to this!

  • Cardio. Start your workout with a light walk/run. You can do this for a total of 10-15 minutes. If you want to challenge yourself, find some stairs and run up and down for the entire time.
  • Running StairsWaking Lunge. Begin in a standing position, then step forward with one leg. Land on the heel then forefoot. Flexing your knees and hips – lower your bodyweight as you drop your back knee. Torso should remain upright. Drive through the heel of your front foot and extend both knees to raise yourself back to a standing position. Lunge forward with opposite leg. Adjust as necessary and listen to your body. Beginners should do 2 sets of 20. Advanced 3 sets of 50
  • Box jump squats. Find a sturdy bench or step. Stand with parallel feet – shoulder width apart. Start by doing a regular squat. Slowly lower your butt and hips, bending your knees as if you were going to sit on an imaginary chair. Engage your core and do an explosive jump onto the bench. Drop again to a squat. Press through the heels to return to a standing position. Jump down and repeat for a total of 3 sets. An alternative exercise to jump squats are regular squats, or wall squats. Beginners: 2 sets of 10. Advanced: 3 sets of 3
  • Decline push-ups. This exercise is an advanced version of a regular push-up. I recommend you only do this if you can do 5 or more regular push-ups. Start on your hands and knees. Lift your feet into position on either a bench or chair. Realign your body and make sure your body forms a straight line. In a controlled motion, slowly lower your upper body. Be sure to look up slightly — to avoid hitting your face. Beginners: 2 sets of 12. Advanced: 3 sets of 25.Decline push-up
  • Chair Dips. There are several variations of dips: bent, straight, and single leg dips. Work with your body and do what is suitable for you. Stand facing away from the bench or chair.  I will demonstrate a raised single-leg dip. Sit on the very edge of a bench or chair. Walk your feet out in order to be perpendicular to the floor – hands should be placed beside you. Bend your elbows 90 degrees as you slowly lower your body to the floor without touching it. Try to get your feet below your hips, squeezing your core while supporting your bodyweight with your arms.  Lift your weight up and repeat switching legs.  Beginners: 2 sets of 10. Advanced: 3 sets of 30.
    Bench Dips

Be sure to stretch for a good 5-10 minutes after your workout. Stretching is very important, this will help your overall range of motion and can prevent injury and soreness.

For a healthier you and to see faster results, it is also important to incorporate additional healthy habits to your daily routine. Here are a few I recommend:

  1. Eat clean. Avoid processed foods and eat plenty of vegetables and lean proteins.
  2. Drink water. Lots of it! Water keeps your organs functioning properly and keeps you hydrated while exercising. I recommend 6-8 cups a day.
  3. Take daily vitamins. I recently started taking Hyperbiotics Pro-15, and Hyperbiotics Immune. One gives me an extra dose of probiotics to cleanse my digestive system. While Immune offers time-released supplements of Vitamin C and Zinc. Love them both!
